A lot can go wrong with a toilet, and toilets are probably the last thing in your house that you want to deal with. In this article we will discuss the various different places where your toilet can leak or run and give you some new vocabulary words so that you can solve the problem.
1. Leaks around the base of the toilet.
Leaks around the base of the toilet on the floor are generally due to a bad seal of the wax ring on the closet ring. The wax ring is a wax ring that seals the toilet to the closet ring. The closet ring is the part of the piping that coming out of the floor that the toilet sits on. A leak hear is not pleasant, especially since the leaking water is going to be dirty.
2. Leaks on small pipe that is connected to the toilet.
The small pipe is your water supply line. One end is connected to a valve and the other is connected to the toilet, and supplies water to the ballcock. A leak here indicates either a loose connection or a bad seal around the ballcock.
3. Leaks around bolts on underside of the toilet.
These bolts are called the mounting bolts. Inside the toilet’s water tank there are rubber washers that are supposed to prevent water from leaking out the bolt holes. If water is leaking you will need to remove the tank in order to get access to the inner wing nuts that hold the mounting bolts tight against the tank bottom.
4. Leak coming from where the tank meets the toilet bowl.
This generally indicates that the tank to bowl washer is either not set right or has cracked. To fix this the tank must be removed and the washer either replaced or set properly.
5. The toilet runs forever!
This can be caused by a few of things. If you are able to lift the float up and the water stops then either the flush valve is leaking or the float is not set properly. If you lift up and the water keeps flowing then the ballcock likely needs to be replaced.
